Birds are one of the most visible and measurable indicators of a healthy environment, both near at hand and in the faraway places from which they migrate. The health of birds and changes in bird populations carry powerful messages about the health of our environment. When we create a better environment for birds, we are also creating a healthier environment for ourselves.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, bird watching is the second fastest growing leisure activity in the U.S., just behind gardening. There are nearly 50 million birders in the U.S. (about one-fifth of the population) with an economic impact of over $80 billion. People who care about birds are also contributing to the health of the economy.
Our programs, projects, and places help connect the people of Southwestern Pennsylvania with birds and nature. Through our education programs we help people engage with conservation. We reach people of all ages, providing learning opportunities for adults, support for teachers, and chances for students to gain hands-on experience with science, technology, and math skills.
Your support increases our impact, helps us engage the people we serve, and lets them know you care about something they value. Visit our donation page for membership options and consider becoming a member of ASWP.
