All three species of Bluebirds are only found in North America. In Pennsylvania, we only see the Eastern Bluebird. At one time, bluebirds were extirpated across much of the continent. Starting in the 1960s their populations have successfully been restored by a human intervention – the nest box.
At Buffalo Creek and Succop Nature Park, we have installed several bluebird, or cavity nest, boxes that are monitored from March through August. The data, collected by trained volunteers, is entered into a national database, NestWatch.
Our contributions help scientists understand more about how climate change, urbanization, and land use affect breeding birds.
