We have a full month of fun and engaging programs lined up! And be sure to join us for Birds and More Naturalist-led Walks, every Tuesday at Buffalo Creek Nature Park; Wednesday at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve; and Thursday at Succop Nature Park. Preschool: Fledglings — Whooooo’s Awake? – January 11 at Succop Nature Park from 10 – 11:15 am. Give your 3-5 year old a head start on a lifetime of loving the outdoors. You and your preschooler will share a seasonal story, activities and a walk. Advance registration is required - $4 per member child and $8 for nonmember; an adult caregiver attends for free. Dress for the weather!

Beechwood After-School Series - January 12 at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve from 4:30 - 6 pm. Get your child outside into nature this winter. This drop-off after-school program at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve serves as the perfect respite from an overload of screen time. Winter at Beechwood has its own unique features and fascinating encounters with nature. Explore our meadows, forests and ecosystems for animals and their homes with Audubon educators all the while having fun! Every session has different activities. Ages K-3rd grade. $5 Members, $10 Non-members. Registration is required and the program is held outdoors; dress for the weather!

Birds and Climate Change – January 13 Online Program via Zoom from 7 – 8:30 pm. Audubon’s findings show that nearly 2/3 of North America’s bird species are severely threatened by climate change. What is the evidence and how will birds in North America be impacted? This talk will cover the findings of the 2019 Audubon’s Survival by Degrees Report and the current research showing the challenges facing bird species across the continent. Free. 

Weekend Volunteer Naturalist Training – January 15 from 9 am – 12 pm. Learn more about options at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve or Succop Nature Park. Share your enthusiasm for nature as a weekend trail docent! This new program will train you in casual interaction with visitors to our reserve to connect them to birds and nature while also recording wildlife sightings and, where appropriate, participating in community science projects.

Buffalo Creek Bellwethers: Louisiana Waterthrush: Life History and Ecology – January 20 Online Program Via Zoom from 7 - 8 pm. The Buffalo Creek region contains some of the highest quality habitat in western Pennsylvania. It is home to many species that are not commonly found. Come learn about some of these amazing species, their importance, and how they help us to understand the state of the watershed. Online only. Free. 

Snowshoe Making Class – January 22 at Succop Nature Park from 2 - 4 pm. Snowshoes allow you to walk on top of deep snow—instead of falling down through it! They’ve been in use for centuries in North country areas—and in this hands-on workshop, we will use heat to bend PVC tubing into frames, then attach harness leather walking pads and boot straps. Maximum attendance for this program is 6 people, and one week advance registration is required.

Bald Eagle Camera Watching Skills – January 24 Online Program Via Zoom from 7 - 8 pm. Hear the comeback story of the Bald Eagle to the Pittsburgh region, and learn about behaviors to watch for on Bald Eagle nest cameras. Free.

Homeschool Program – January 28 at Succop Nature Park from 10 am – 1 pm. Register for this class or contact us to choose a topic of your choice Many of the classes can be expanded to multiple sessions if requested.
